Corrosion control is a concern whenever water is present in a metalworking fluid. Heat removal is one of the most important functions of a metalworking fluid. However, water alone in contact with freshly machined metal leads to corrosion. Thus, corrosion control is a problem faced by every manufacturer using water diluted metalworking fluids. The term “rust” is used when the corrosion applies only to iron and steel. The term “corrosion” is more appropriate because this also includes non-ferrous metals.

Corrosion control: is the prevention of deterioration by mitigating the chemical reactions that cause corrosion in three general ways: (i) changing the environment (ii) changes the material or (iii) places a barrier between the material and its environment.
